Two weeks and counting...
Happy New Year! Today in Chicago the sky is gray, thick and heavy with clouds, lit by the dimness of permanently 5:00 evening light, despite the fact that it is mid-afternoon, and rain falls continually from the sky. Chicago always seems more like an industrial wasteland in this sort of gloom, which makes us eager to depart for sunny South American summer weather. We have secured (and insured) our plane tickets and will be departing on Wednesday evening, January 18th. We fly to Miami, Florida, where we will spend the night; the only drawback to our extremely cheap tickets. Thursday morning we fly into Ecuador. We land in Quito and continue on to Guayaquil where we will board a bus (provided our Spanish is strong enough to get us on the correct one) that will take us to Cuenca where we will meet our boss at CEDEI, Kacie. Our return date to Chicago is set as July 31st. The next two weeks will bring the joys of packing, organizing, and moving most of our wordly possessions into storage and the sorrows of saying good-bye to our friends and family in the Midwest. All this will be tempered by the excitement of living in a new place and learning a new culture. We are thrilled to have this opportunity for learning and exploration.
